The “Xian Xinghai International Showcase for Young Pianists” will be held at the Ruins of St. Paul’s on 22 November, and its organiser, Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), is now calling for the participation of local piano talents aged 24 or below (born in or after 2002).

Applications are open until 6 November, with regulations and designated repertoire available on the programme’s website, according to IC.

The event has been organised to “carry forward and promote [Chinese composer] Xian Xinghai’s patriotic devotion and musical legacy, and to allow more people to learn about his close ties with Macau”, the culture bureau has pointed out.

Furthermore, the event aims to provide a platform for local young musicians to showcase their talent, facilitate musical and cultural exchange among young people from different countries, and further contribute to the establishment of Macau as “a base for exchange and cooperation where Chinese culture is the mainstream and diverse cultures coexist”, according to IC.

In addition, the showcase is expected to bring together outstanding young pianists from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and other cities in mainland China, the Portuguese-speaking countries and the Belt and Road Initiative member countries, to perform and exchange ideas, promoting the integration of music cultures as well as mutual learning among different countries and regions, and creating an international, professional and high-quality platform for musical exchange.

Xian Xinghai was born in Macau in 1905 and later studied music in France. During the turbulent period of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he composed immortal works such as The Yellow River Cantata, strengthening the national morale through music. His unwavering patriotism and outstanding artistic achievements remain a source of pride for Macau residents, according to IC. More details are available via this link.
