A new exhbition showcasing Guangdong paintings from the Qing Dynasty officially opened at Macao Museum of Art (MAM) on friday.
The museum is located in the Macao Cultural Centre (CCM) complex in Nape.
Titled “Lucidity in a Prosperous Era: Guangdong Paintings of the Qing Dynasty”, the exhibition is organised by MAM, Guangdong Museum (Guangzhou Lu Xun Museum) and Guangzhou Museum of Art, with the support of Hong Kong Museum of Art, which is under the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
The exhibition’s opening ceremony took place on Friday and was presided over by Macau’s Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) President Leong Wai Man, Guangdong Museum (Guangzhou Lu Xun Museum) Deputy Director Ling Lili, Guangzhou Museum of Art Party Secretary Wang Ping and Hong Kong Museum of Art’s Xubaizhai Gallery Director Bernadette Mok Yun Tai, among other officials.
This exhibition is built upon CCM’s collection, supplemented by treasures from Guangdong Museum (Guangzhou Lu Xun Museum), Guangzhou Museum of Art, as well as Hong Kong Museum of Art.
Featuring 136 works (sets) of paintings and calligraphy, it presents the diverse explorations of Guangdong painters in brushwork techniques, subject matters and the integration of Chinese and Western cultures, illustrating the development of Guangdong painting from the periphery to the mainstream, and from tradition to innovation.
CCM’s collection of Guangdong paintings from the Qing dynasty, in particular, is particularly distinguished by its figure paintings and works on historical subjects, with notable holdings of high-quality pieces by masters such as Su Liupeng and He Chong, according to IC.
This cross-institutional collaboration effectively promotes regional cultural exchange and serves as a vivid practice of “building a culturally vibrant Greater Bay Area”, according to IC.
The exhibition is open from 10 am to 7 pm daily, including on public holidays, except Mondays, until 2 November. Admission is free. For more information visit MAM’s website.
