A team representing Macau SAR, comprising Sam Ka Lok, Loi Nga Hei and Cai Pei Jun, recently won the gold award and several other awards in the grand finale of “Coding4Integrity Asian Youth Anti-Corruption Hackathon” for their prototype of an AI-powered public procurement analysis platform for corruption prevention.
Co-hosted by Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA), the anti-corruption hackathon was joined by teams from 14 countries and regions.
The term “hackathon” – from the words “hack” (creative problem-solving) and “marathon” – refers to a time-limited event or competition where people or competitors engage in a rapid and collaborative engineering process (such as developing software or hardware solutions for a specific challenge) over a short period of time, such as 24-48 hours, according to Wikipedia and other online platforms.
Macau’s Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) held a local preliminary round in May this year and selected two teams to represent Macau in the contest in Hong Kong between 15-19 September, according to a press release issued by CCAC.
Participating teams were required to develop a digital solution prototype for the purpose of assisting in tackling the challenges related to corruption in Asia.
The CCAC joined hands with the co-organiser of the Macau preliminary round, the Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Center (CPTTM), to provide the two teams with various professional training and technical support.
The winning team, “Just Do”, designed their winning solution, a prototype of an AI-powered public procurement analysis platform named “BidTrust”, to help public departments enhance the efficiency of assessing tender documents in procurement processes and detect possible irregularities to prevent corruption, according to CCAC.
Furthermore, the team also won the event’s “Audience’s Favourite” award. In addition, both the Macau teams won “Friend of Hong Kong” awards.
Meanwhile, the winning team’s impressive innovation has also given Sam, Loi and Cai the opportunity to present their corruption prevention solution at the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption that will take place in Doha, Qatar at the end of this year. – GNM
