The University of Macau (UM) will hold the Ceremony for the Conferment of Honorary and Higher Degrees 2025 at its premises on 30 November, during which honorary doctorates will be conferred on American economist-cum-Nobel Laureate Thomas J. Sargent and Zhejiang University professor Ze Zhang, according to the university. 

Sargent received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 2011 together with fellow American economist Christopher A. Sims for their empirical research on cause and effect in the macroeconomy. Being one of the most-cited economists in the world, he specialises in macroeconomics, monetary economics and time series econometrics. 

He currently serves as the William R. Berkley Professor of Economics and Business at New York University as well as the honorary director of the Sargent Institute of Quantitative Economics and Finance at Peking University. On 30 November, he will receive a Doctor of Business Administration honoris causa from the University of Macau. 

Zhang, an expert in crystal structure in materials science, is a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician, who serves as a professor at Zhejiang University’s School of Materials Science and Engineering. In addition, he is a chief scientist of China’s National Basic Research Program, according to UM. 

He has received numerous prestigious national science and technology awards, including the first prize of the National Natural Science Award, the Science and Technology Award from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, as well as the China Young Scientist Award.

Furthermore, Zhang has published over 350 papers in international academic journals, including Nature and Science. Zhang will receive from UM a Doctor of Science honoris causa. – GNM
