The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) will hold a theology public lecture and evening prayer, entitled “Making Hope Real”, at the St. Dominic Church from 7-8 pm next Friday evening. In the Christian tradition, “hope is not a wishful thinking, but the virtue that helps us through the difficulties we experience on the path to salvation”, according to the lecture’s information on USJ’s website.
St Thomas Aquinas provides an account of the life of Christian virtue grounded in the theological virtues of faith, hope and love, but he also shows us how the cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance) enable us to live these theological virtues in the concrete circumstances of our lives, the information continues. Organised by USJ’s Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy, the lecture will be looking at how St Thomas’ account of hope is informed by his account of the cardinal virtues.
The speaker, Fr David Goodill, teaches moral theology for Blackfriars Studium at the USJ. He has a doctorate from Switzerland’s University of Fribourg, and also studied at the Catholic University of Leuven, University of Manchester, as well as the University of Cambridge. His research centres around the dialogue between contemporary philosophy and moral theology, and on questions in fundamental moral theology. For more information visit USJ’s website.
