1ST MACAO INTERNATIONAL SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL TO BE HELD IN MARCH

MACAO POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY’S ONE COUNTRY, TWO SYSTEMS RESEARCH CENTRE GAVE LECTURES ON CONSTITUTION, BASIC LAW AND NATIONAL SECURITY FOR 8,300 SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS LAST YEAR

The 1st Macao International Shorts Film Festival will be held from 23-30 March, jointly organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG), featuring film screenings, workshops and lectures. The festival aims to promote local film and television productions while also introducing other Asian and international short films to the audience. 

A press conference to introduce the festival was held at Banyan Tree Macau, Galaxy Macau in Cotai on Wednesday, attended by IC President Leong Wai Man and Vice President Cheang Kai Meng, GEG Director Philip Cheng, as well as GEG’s Corporate Office Executive Vice President Buddy Lam. 

The festival is divided into four screening sections, namely “Macao Shorts”, “New Voices from Horizon”, “Director in Focus” and “Special Screenings”. During the festival, various short films from different genres will be screened at the Cinematheque.Passion as well as Galaxy Macau’s Galaxy Cinemas, with the closing and award ceremony scheduled to be held at Galaxy International Convention Centre’s Galaxy Auditorium on 29 March.

The 1st Macao International Shorts Film Festival’s organising committee is chaired by Gaia Furrer, artistic director of “Giornate degli autori” (Venice Days), an independent section of the Venice Film Festival. The committee members comprise Toronto International Film Festival’s short film curator Jason Anderson, mainland China’s film producer and curator Shen Yang, Thai actress Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying aka Aokbab, as well as other professional filmmakers from mainland China, Southeast Asia, Portugal, Europe and America as judges.

The Macau productions shortlisted in this festival are:

  • Before the Flight (Chan Teng Teng)
  • Bubble (Wong Mei Ling)
  • Sea (Chan Chon Sin)
  • Walk the Same Path (Cheang Kun Ieong)
  • Till the End of the World (Chan Nga Lei)
  • The Best Gift Ever (Hao Chit)
  • The Melancholy of Gods (Lei Cheok Mei)
  • The Unearthed Memory (Ho Kueng Lon)
  • Unsettled (Ho Check Pan)
  • A Beautiful Journey: Documentary of Na Tcha Customs and Beliefs (U Chi Wan)

Meanwhile, the Macao International Shorts Film Festival is not the same as the Macau International Short Film Festival co-organised by Creative Macau – Center for Creative Industries and the Institute of European Studies of Macau (IEEM), the 14th edition of which was held at Teatro Capital in December 2023.
