A joint exhibition by local artists Angela Hoi Ka Ian and Jovinia Antonio, entitled “The Macau Dream is Well and Alive – Conceptual Art” is currently held at the Creative Macau gallery, located in the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM) complex in Nape.

The exhibition’s theme, as stated in its title, is based on recent events and challenges observed by both artists who through the exhibition express their feelings about the times of confinement and isolation, something shared by everyone else living in Macau in the past three pandemic years – from early 2020 to early 2023.

During those years, the people in Macau had to adapt with “new habits and learned to live in isolation”, according to the exhibition’s information leaflet. The three years spent on the internet and virtual connections helped ease the growing “psychological tension and despair”.

While everything came to a halt during the pandemic, the number of internet users increased rapidly as more people turned to the Internet for work and creativity. The two artists approached the theme in their own different ways, using various materials to create non-traditional forms that reflect their everyday lives as they present their views on Macau’s post-pandemic present and future through conceptual art.

The exhibition runs until 27 April. Admission is free. For more information visit Creative Macau’s official website. (Gilbert Humphrey)
