The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) will soon send the white-cheeked gibbon kept in Seac Pai Van Park in Coloane to Guangzhou Zoo, as well as participate in the conservation of national rare wildlife and promote the protection, reproduction and sustainable development of these species.
The white-cheeked gibbon in the Seac Pai Van Park is currently undergoing quarantine and the keepers are closely observing its conditions. It was abandoned there in 1995 and is affectionately known as “Blackie” due to its black fur.
White-cheeked gibbons are classified as national first-class protected animals and listed under Appendix I of the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flore” (CITES). They primarily live in the wild in groups, feeding on tender leaves, buds and fruits.
Through active negotiations and following health checks and quarantine procedures, Blackie will be relocated to the Guangzhou Zoo this month, and included in the conservation of national rare wildlife and live with its counterparts. Both IAM and the Guangzhou Zoo will observe Blackie’s adaptation and physical condition in its new environment.
