Macau SAR’s entry in the 2024 Venice Biennale’s 60th International Art Exhibition will be showcased at the Macau Cultural Centre’s (CCM) Art Space in Nape from this Friday until 30 April, according to the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC).
Titled “Above Zobeide – Art from Macao at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia”, the exhibition was presented at last year’s Venice Biennale from 18 April to 24 November.
The exhibition’s local-leg is organised by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM), which is located in the CCM complex.
Curated by the exhibition’s co-creator Chang Chan, “Above Zobeide” showcases large-scale art installations and digital prints created by young Macau-born artist Wong Weng Cheong, presenting a fictional world while conveying concerns about the development of human civilisation.
Inspired by the city of Zobeide in the novel “Invisible Cities”, the artist – who studied fine art in the United Kingdom – employed art installations to create a fictional world full of metaphors: a wilderness above the ruins of a city – inhabited solely by a group of herbivores with elongated legs.
The curator said that this art creation echoed the biennale’s theme last year, “Foreigners Everywhere”, exploring the concept of foreigners and the apocalyptic anxieties of contemporary society through displacement of identity and spatial alienation.
Furthermore, the exhibition reflects the concerns of young Macau artists from “regional narratives to global issues” through the artistic practices from the perspectives of global citizens, according to an IC press release.
Last year marked the ninth time Macau participated in the famous Venice Biennale since 2007.
The exhibition in Venice attracted nearly 77,000 visitors during the biennale.
MAM, including the Art Space, is open from 10 am to 7 pm (last admission at 6:30 pm) daily, including on public holidays, except Mondays. Admission is free. For more information visit MAM’s website. (Wong Kin Ang)
