The Taipa Village Art Space is showcasing the photographic work of seasoned photographer David Hartung in an exhibition entitled “THE FLAVORS of SICHUAN: A Tribute to the Art of Sichuan Cuisine”.
Hartung is an American lensman who has lived and worked in Asia for most of his adult life. In 2008, he made Macau his home, helping to launch Destination Macau magazine and becoming a founding member of the team that launched Tasting Kitchen (TK) magazine. He has remained in the SAR ever since, making it a regional hub for his photographic work.
His latest project has taken him into the heart of Sichuan Province, where he created an intimate portrait of one of the nation’s most complex culinary traditions, the exhibition’s information page points out. The project began in 2019 but was briefly halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, resuming in 2023.
For this project, Hartung made numerous trips to Chengdu, from where he explored the province’s landscapes, rural communities and local life – captured in a series of 34 colour as well as black-and-white photographs that highlight Sichuan cuisine within its cultural, geographical and historical contexts.
Meanwhile, the exhibition also coincides with the artist’s new coffee table book by the same title, which expands on the visual narratives.
The exhibition’s opening ceremony will take place on 30 September.
