A total of 17 Macau enterprises and restaurants were awarded halal certificates during a “Halal Certificate Presentation Ceremony” held on Thursday, which was attended by over 180 representatives from local enterprises.

Organised by the Industrial Association of Macau and the Macao Trade and co-organised by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), among other co-organisers, Thursday’s event included an introduction to the halal certification application process.
Speaking at the event, Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong said that the SAR welcomed over 14 million visitor arrivals in the first five months of this year, a year-on-year increase of about 50 per cent, with the number of international visitors, particularly, increasing 1.75 times year-on-year – including from countries with large or majority Muslim population like Indonesia and Malaysia.
This means that there is an increasing demand for halal-certified food and dining options in Macau.
Meanwhile, the event was also attended by Industrial Association of Macau President Chui Yuk Lum as well as Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong Saeed Uddin.
There are currently over 10,000 Muslims in the city, the majority coming from Indonesia, which include some local residents as well as migrant workers, according to the Islamic Association of Macau. (Gilbert Humphrey)
