Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has expressed his optimism regarding a solution to restrictions on Macau residency applications by Portuguese nationals after meeting the SAR’s Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai on Wednesday.
The prime minister believes that “things are on track for us to have a more agile, easier and faster system”, according to reports by The Portugal News and Lusa News Agency.
The report has pointed out that Macau has not accepted new residency applications from Portuguese nationals due to the “exercise of a specialised technical functions” since August 2023, allowing only the grounds of family reunion or previous connection to the SAR.
Montenegro said that both Portugal and Macau were in contact and would follow up on the dialogue first initiated during Portuguese Foreign Affairs Minister Paulo Rangel’s March visit to Macau.
According to the prime minister, a follow-up meeting between Portugal and Macau SAR will take place between 4 and 6 February 2026, which he described as one of the objective results of his meeting with Sam.
Meanwhile, Montenegro (pictured, left) met with Macau’s chief executive (right) at the Government Headquarters. Apart from the issue of Portuguese residency application, the two leaders also exchanged views on how to strengthen the SAR’s unique role in consolidating the friendly relations between China and Portugal, as well as how to enhance exchanges and cooperation between Macau and Portugal, according to the SAR’s Government Information Bureau (GCS).
