Two Chinese nationals have been arrested by Indonesian authorities for a burglary involving an empty house in an elite housing complex in Karawaci, Tangerang City, Banten province, while a third suspect is currently on the Southeast Asian country’s wanted list after reportedly fleeing to China.
The three suspects allegedly stole jewellery, precious metals and cash (US dollars and rupiah) on 25 August with a total value of approximately Rp. 4.5 billion or around US$275,000, according to various media reports.
According to Tangerang Police, the two arrested suspects were 49-year-old Feng Shangwei and 39-year-old Huang Xiaobo, while the wanted suspect has been identified as CW, aged 40.
The Indonesian authorities are currently coordinating with the Interpol to have the third suspect arrested, Tangerang Police Chief Raden Muhammad Jauhari told a press conference recently.
According to the police, the suspects had been staying at a hotel in Jakarta and planned to flee to Shanghai, before being intercepted by authorities at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport as they were about to board a plane. However, CW managed to escape and returned to China.
The two arrested suspects now face a prison term of maximum seven years.
Meanwhile, a CCTV footage showing the suspects breaking into the house has now gone viral. – GNM
