World’s governing body for football, FIFA, has cancelled Indonesia as the host of the Under-20 Men’s World Cup, which was to take place from 20 May to 11 June in six Indonesian cities, including in Bali, after the island province’s Governor Wayan Koster sent a letter to Indonesia’s sports ministry asking for Israel to be banned from competing in the province. Anti-Israel sentiments are common in pro-Palestine Indonesia. However, its president, Joko Widodo, has urged Indonesian citizens not to link politics with sports, according to various reports.
