Indonesian badminton player Jonatan Christie has reached the world No. 1 spot in the new BWF Men’s Singles Ranking recently, according to various media reports.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) released the ranking on Tuesday, making 28-year-old Christie the first Indonesian to reach the position after 26 years, following his now-retired compatriot Taufik Hidayat, who competed in Macau Open in 2007 and 2008.
Hidayat, who is now the deputy minister for youth and sport of Indonesia, won the men’s singles title at the Macau Open in 2008 after defeating Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei.
Christie also competed in the Macau Open in 2015, during which he defeated India’s Kidambi Srikanth and Taiwan’s Cheng Kuo-po in rounds 1 and 2, respectively.
Christie, then an 18-year-old ranked world No. 40, was eventually eliminated in round 3 by South Korea’s Jeon Hyeok-jin. – GNM/Gilbert Humphrey
