The 38th Macao International Music Festival (MIMF) will take place from 2 October to 29 November, featuring 10 programmes presented by world-renowned musicians and emerging young talents, one music camp and 12 “Floating Notes Across the City” activities, covering Chinese opera, western opera, contemporary masterpieces and symphonic concerts, among others.
Drawing inspiration from the Maritime Silk Road, this year’s MIMF, themed “Silk Resonances”, offers a musical feast that blends with the cultural encounters along the Silk Road, and promotes mutual learning and dialogue between Eastern and Western civilisations, according to the organiser, Macau’s Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC).
This year the festival kicks off with the “My Grand View Garden – Yue Opera” by the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe (pictured). Led by first-class actress Chen Lijun, this production combines delicate, melodious singing with modern stage design, allowing the audiences to indulge themselves in a dream where traditional opera and modern aesthetics intertwine.
Other programmes include “Turandot” – Opera in Three Acts by Giacomo Puccini, directed by international superstar Jackie Chan in his directorial debut, infusing Puccini’s masterpiece with Eastern essence through the power and beauty of martial arts, and showcasing artistic brilliance across time and space.
Internationally acclaimed composer and conductor Tan Dun will join hands with the China National Symphony Orchestra and Chorus to present “Tan Dun Conducts Beethoven’s Ninth and Nine”, creating a dialogue across time and space between Beethoven’s classic “Symphony No. 9” and the work inspired in ancient Eastern mythology “Nine”. The concert “Tan Dun Conducts Mozart and Beethoven” will open with Beethoven’s Overture to “The Creatures of Prometheus”.
Meanwhile, in developing musical talents, several young Macau musicians are participating in this year’s festival, including two emerging local string musicians, Nina Wong and Hoi Yan Lok who collaborate with Maestro Tan Dun in Mozart’s “Double Concerto for Violin and Viola”. And, there will be the joint performance of young Macau pianist Chan Chon Teng and musicians of the Macao Orchestra in the concert “Bravo Macao!” dedicated to the city, showcasing the vitality of the new generations.
