A total of 1,090 human trafficking victims from across Asia have been rescued by authorities in the Philippines recently. The victims were reportedly tricked into entering the country for a promising job only to be held captive – their passports confiscated – and forced to run internet scams, working up to 18 hours per day. According to the Philippine authorities, the victims were mostly from mainland China, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, with some also coming from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and Nepal. Some suspected ringleaders have been arrested, comprising Chinese, Indonesian and Malaysian nationals, according to various media reports.
