News of a new type of WhatsApp fraud has recently been circulating online. Upon receipt of a stranger’s message, if the victim clicks “block” as recommended, their account would be hacked.

According to official information, the “block” above is a “security” function in WhatsApp. The system automatically generates a reminder when receiving an incoming message from someone not in the user’s contact list. If the user presses the “block” button, it will prevent them from receiving further messages and calls from that phone number.

The Judiciary Police’s (PJ) Anti-Fraud Coordination Center reminds the public that it has not received any report of the fraud mentioned above. The center advises the public to be careful and verify information from the Internet to avoid falling into fraudsters’ traps.

If you suspect that you have been defrauded, contact the PJ’s Anti-Fraud Enquiry Hotline at 8800 7777.
