MACAU’S EMPLOYMENT RATE IN FINAL QUARTER OF 2023 REMAINS ‘STEADY’ COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS QUARTER

General unemployment rate, local residents’ unemployment rate and the underemployment rate in Macau throughout October–December 2023 were 2.3, 2.9 and 1.4 per cent, respectively, indicating steady results compared to the previous period of September–November, according to data released by Macau’s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) on Friday. 

According to the data, the labour force living in Macau totalled 379,700 and the labour force participation rate was 68 per cent. Total employment was 371,100 and the number of employed residents totalled 286,100 – down by 900 and 1,700, respectively from the previous period.

In addition, the number of unemployed was 8,600, similar to that of the previous period. Most of the unemployed searching for a new job were previously engaged in gaming and junket activities, hotels, restaurants and similar activities, as well as retail trade. Meanwhile, the proportion of new labour market entrants seeking jobs for the first time decreased by 2.1 percentage points to 12.2 per cent of the total unemployed. 

Furthermore, the number of the underemployed went down by 200 from the previous figure to 5,200, with the majority working in construction, transport and storage sectors.
