The University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) “Unveiling the Artistic Journey of Eduardo Nery at Macau Airport” will run until 26 April. Launched earlier this month, the exhibition is being held in the Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery at USJ Ilha Verde Campus.
The exhibition marks 30 years since Eduardo Nery was invited by the government of then Portuguese-administered Macau to create a mural for the passenger terminal at the Macau International Airport, an artwork commissioned by CAM – Sociedade do Aeroporto Internacional de Macau, SARL back in 1994 to enhance the airport’s public space.
The large tile panel covers the entire front of the departure lounge mezzanine, measuring 210 metres in length and a little over 2 metres high. It was unveiled during the official opening of the Macau International Airport in December 1995.
The themes depicted in the mural include Portuguese and Chinese religions and myths, historical significance of the sea in connecting Portugal and Macau, nautical science, aviation in Macau, as well as aspects of Portuguese culture from the 16th and 17th centuries.
USJ’s current exhibition is a tribute to Nery’s artistic work, which delves into the artist’s creative process, offering a unique insight into the conception and realisation of the memorable tile panel that has become a symbol at the local airport.
Hosted by USJ’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the exhibition is open from 9 am to 7 pm on Monday to Friday, and from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday. For more information visit USJ’s website. (Wong Kin Ang)
