The current tropical cyclone signal No. 1 will be replaced by signal No. 3 at 4 pm, Macau’s Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) has announced.
As of 2 pm, tropical cyclone Maliksi – Macau’s first typhoon this year – was located 230 kilometres southwest of Macau, moving toward the western coast of Guangdong province, according to the bureau.
Under the influence of its rainband, showers will continue to be frequent, heavy at times with thunderstorms, with the accumulated amount of rainfall expected to be high between today and tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the chance of a significant storm surge is unlikely as the astronomical tide is not high within these two days. However, some of Macau’s low-lying areas may still experience flooding due to persistent rainfall.
Maliksi is predicted to make landfall in the area between western Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta area between tonight and early morning on Saturday (1 June). For more information about the local weather visit SMG’s website. (Gilbert Humphrey)
