Japanese actress Anna Sawai recently became both the first Japanese and Asian actress to win the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the 2024 Emmy Awards for her role as Lady Toda Mariko in “Shogun”, which received the greatest number of nominations this year – with its first season winning 18 awards out of total 25 nominations.
The 32-year-old New Zealand-born actress, who partly grew up in Hong Kong and the Philippines, expressed in her acceptance speech gratitude to her co-star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada, who also won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the same TV series.
Meanwhile, “Shogun” also became the first Japanese-language series to win an Emmy award for Outstanding Drama Series during this year’s 76th Emmy Awards and it set a record as the most awarded single season of television in the Emmy Awards history.
