An Indian teenager named Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest World Chess Champion after defeating defending champion Ding Liren of China in the 2024 World Chess Championship in Singapore on Thursday.
Also known as Gukesh D (pictured), the 18-year-old chess prodigy is also the youngest player to have surpassed a FIDE rating of 2750, which he did at the age of 17. In addition, he is the third-youngest chess player to have surpassed the FIDE rating of 2700 at the age of 16. At the age of 12, he earned the title of grandmaster and he remains the third-youngest grandmaster in the history of chess.
At this year’s 45th Chess Olympiad Gukesh won a team gold and an individual gold medal, while at the 44th Chess Olympiad in 2022, he won a team bronze and an individual gold medal.
In Thursday’s 2024 World Chess Championship, Gukesh became the 18th world champion and the second Indian to hold the title after five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand, according to various media reports.
