Local art group Art For All (AFA) Macau will launch its AFA exhibition: Ephemera – Women Narratives in Contemporary Images Exhibition Series I: “Dreamscape Macao – Solo Exhibition of Alice Im” at Shoppes at Parisian on the 3rd floor of The Parisian Macao in Cotai on 11 April.
Organised by AFA Macau, the exhibition will be held at Shop 305a-c from 12 April to 28 June, being part of the art group’s annual programme of “Ephemera – Women Narratives in Contemporary Images Exhibition Series”.
Curated by Alice Kok, “Dreamscape Macao” is a series that Alice Im meticulously crafted over five years in Macau, beginning in 2018. The current exhibition showcases 45 selected works from this collection, which has previously shown at the Contemporary Women’s Photography Exhibition at the Pingyao International Photography Festival, the Dali International Photography Festival and the Beijing 798 Inter Art Center & Gallery, earning significant recognition from China’s prominent photography critics and art reviewers.
The brilliance of “Dreamscape Macao” lies in Alice Im’s decision to physically insert herself into the compositions, enveloped in hotel bathrobes and towels. These function beyond professional markers; they symbolize a state of namelessness, blurring the boundaries between individual and collective, local and tourist. This attire allows her to transform into an observer, examining the city through a detached perspective, according to the information on the exhibition published on AFA Macau’s Facebook page.
Furthermore, the exhibition “invites viewers to participate in an exploration of psychogeography. When we gaze upon these images, we see not only a female photographer’s personal narrative but also glimpse our own shadows within urban spaces. Alice Im’s work reminds us that cities are not merely physical environments we inhabit but domains that shape our psychological and emotional states”.
