The Australian Chamber of Commerce in Macau (AustCham Macau) recently held its special Power Hour Lunch, titled “From Down Under to Beyond”, at St. Regis Macao in Cotai as a farewell event for Australian Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner Shannon Powell (pictured), who has also been the Australian Deputy Consul-General to Hong Kong and Macau over the past few years.
Around 70 people attended the event, during which the group shared the latest trade data of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) along with the business opportunities in the region.
Powell delivered a presentation detailing her eight years journey with the Australian Trade Commission, spanning from Chile in South America to Hong Kong and Macau, a season in her career that included numerous impactful trade conferences aimed at promoting Australian products to the wider public – including Australian wines.
“We are delighted that the sanctions were lifted before Easter, allowing Australian wines to be exported to China on a significant scale,” the group said.
Responding to a question from one of the attendees about whether the Australian Trade Commission is hopeful that restrictions will also be lifted for Australian beef and lobsters, Powell expressed her optimism saying the trade commission is currently preparing for the official visit of Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Australia in June.
This much-anticipated visit will signify a promising sign for further collaboration and trade opportunities between the two countries and is expected to pave the way for smoother bilateral negotiations and agreements in the future, according to AustCham Macau Chairman Billy Chan.
