The Macao Union Hospital (officially the Island Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Centre of Peking Union Medical College Hospital) in Cotai held an opening ceremony recently, during which Macau’s Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng said that the new hospital marked a significant milestone in local healthcare services.
Ho pointed out that the hospital is an important collaborative effort between Macau and the mainland in the field of healthcare, which is expected to further optimise the SAR’s healthcare system.
Established by the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government with the support of the country, the Macao Union Hospital is a large-scale public healthcare institution providing comprehensive medical services, operated and managed in collaboration with Peking Union Medical College Hospital.
The Macao Union Hospital commenced trial operations on 20 December last year, with the official launch held on 16 September, coinciding with this year’s double celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of the MSAR’s establishment.
Ho also said during the hospital’s official launch that the Macao Union Hospital aimed to become an internationally influential, first-class medical centre based in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) that meets Southeast Asia’s demand for medical services, while also improving local healthcare system and enhancing Macau’s capacity to provide critical care and specialist medical services for local residents.
Covering a land area of around 76,000 square metres and a built area of about 308,000 square metres, the Macao Union Hospital features 852 beds and 26 operating rooms. The entire hospital complex includes the Macao Hospital, Logistics and Support Building, Residential Building for Staff, Administration and Multi-Services Building, as well as the Central Laboratory Building.
