Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand have jointly nominated the kebaya to be included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, with a decision expected next year, according to a report by Malaysia’s The Star.
Recognised as Indonesia’s national costume, kebaya is an upper garment traditionally made from lightweight fabrics like brocade, cotton and lace and is traditionally worn by women in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Southern Thailand. In Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, the traditional clothing is recognised as one of its ethnic costumes. Kebaya has been adopted as the uniforms for the female flight attendants of several airlines across Southeast Asia, including Garuda Indonesia, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Royal Brunei Airlines.
