A Hong Kong ice hockey team member made a “T” gesture to stop a wrong national anthem played during the Ice Hockey World Championship in Sarajevo, capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina recently. The incident took place as the Hong Kong team triumphed over Iran in the second round of the championship’s III-B division. Instead of playing the Chinese national anthem, the controversial protest song “Glory to Hong Kong” was played for about 10 seconds by mistake until one Hong Kong team member noticed and reported the mistake to the organiser, who quickly apologised and corrected the mistake by playing the correct national anthem.
Similar incidents have occurred in recent years as the neighbouring SAR’s Security Bureau found that the protest song appeared in search results when searching for “Hong Kong National Anthem” online. The Hong Kong government has reportedly demanded the correct national anthem be put on top of search results but no improvement has been made, fearing that similar incidents may continue to occur, according to a report by Dimsum Daily.
