Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan announced earlier this week that the Southeast Asian country plans to offer dual citizenship to its skilled diaspora as an effort to “stem a brain drain of local talent”, according to various media reports.

Currently, Indonesian law does not recognise dual citizenship for adults. Indonesian citizens also holding another citizenship must renounce the other citizenship when they turn 18 in order to keep their Indonesian citizenship.

According to Pandjaitan, the Indonesian Government is now planning to give citizenship to former Indonesian citizens living overseas in a bid to bring “very skilful Indonesians back to Indonesia”, as he was quoted by several media reports. (Wong Kin Ang)
