Local church Macau Assembly of God (MAOG) is celebrating Christmas this year with a theatre production on the story of biblical Queen Esther, which is being staged tonight and tomorrow night.
Over the past few years, the Pentecostal church has been celebrating Christmas with its very own self-made theatre productions, which have been popular among Christians in the city.
This year, MAOG’s theatre production, entitled “Esther – Turning Defeat Into Victory”, tells the story of Esther, also known in the original Hebrew language as Hadassah, who is the heroine in the Bible’s Book of Esther. According to the Bible, the Persian King Ahasuerus falls in love with Esther, a Jew, and marries her.
During the same period, one of the King’s officials, Haman, plotted to have all Jews in all of Persia killed. At the end of the story, Queen Esther revealed and decried Haman’s plan to King Ahasuerus, who was eventually executed, leading to Esther being hailed as the heroine.
The show is performed in Cantonese with English subtitles on screen. While tonight’s show has been sold out, tickets for tomorrow’s show are still available, priced at MOP 30 each. The 45-minute show will start at 7:30 pm one each of the two nights.
