A monologue written by Portuguese director Tiago Rodrigues for the actor Tónan Quito, titled “Between the Lines”, will be staged in the Mirror Hall at Dom Pedro V Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The programme is part of the 36th Macao Arts Festival.
The monologue tells the story of a text that never seems to surface – delayed by mysterious reasons until accidents, as real as they are literary, finally bring it to life.
Furthermore, it unfolds as a secret passage between reality and the inner worlds of fiction. Through a narratorial labyrinth, it weaves together Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex with the letters of an imprisoned man to his mother – words found between the lines of a Greek tragedy discovered in a prison library, according to the show’s information page.
Then, it all returns to the present: in a space that belongs to the audience even more than to the performers – the theatre lobby. There, an actor addresses us directly, revealing why the awaited play has frequently failed to kick-off.
Portraying the enigmatic relationship between author and actor, through a role that earned him a nomination for Best Actor by Time Out magazine, Quito forges an intimate relationship with the patrons, ultimately questioning what they truly expect from theatre.
The programme runs for around one hour and 10 minutes. It is performed in Portuguese, with Chinese and English subtitles.
