Macau’s Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai recently expressed profound sorrow on behalf of the SAR at the passing of Zhu Rongji, the nation’s former Premier of the State Council.

Sam extended sincere sympathies to Zhu’s family, according to a press release issued by Macau’s Government Information Bureau (GCS).

Zhu, who attended Macau’s handover ceremony on 20 December 1999, was an outstanding state leader who made significant contributions to the country’s reform, opening-up and modernisation, and who attached great importance to the “one country, two systems” principle as well as Macau’s development, the press release pointed out.

He also witnessed the swearing-in of Macau’s first chief executive, Edmund Ho Hau Wah, and principal officials at the establishment ceremony for the Macau Special Administrative Region.

“Mr Zhu’s passing is a great loss, and he will be forever remembered for his care and support for Macau, as well as for his immense contributions to the nation and its people,” Sam said in the press release.

Zhu died in Beijing on Wednesday at the age of 97.
