The possibility of issuing the Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 8 on tonight is relatively high as Super Typhoon Yagi moves closer to Macau, according to the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG).
According to the latest forecast track, Yagi will pass within 300 kilometres south of Macau on Friday (6 September).
Meanwhile, the bureau has hoisted typhoon signal no. 3, which will remain in force today.
As of 8 am, Yagi was located in the northern part of the South China Sea and was expected to move west northwestward, generally heading towards the vicinity areas between the western coast of Guangdong and Hainan Island.
Winds in Macau will gradually strengthen, with thunderstorms becoming more frequent.
The wind force is expected to rapidly increase on 6 September, with frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms.
Furthermore, the low-lying areas in Macau’s inner harbour may experience flooding of 0.5 metres or less on Friday.
Flooding may become more significant if Yagi takes a more northerly path or intensifies significantly.
