Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese are among the world leaders who have congratulated Indonesian Defence Minister-cum-presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo for winning in quick count for the country’s election that took place on 14 February.
The two along with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe each made a direct phone call to the 72-year-old former army lieutenant general to congratulate him, Prabowo wrote on a social media post.
Other leaders who have congratulated him include Czech Republic’s Prime Minister Petr Fiala, who sent the congratulatory message via social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Prabowo, son of Indonesia’s 8th Minister of Finance Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, ran unsuccessfully for presidency in 2014 against current President Joko Widodo, who ran for second term in 2019, again defeating Prabowo, before making his former rival the military chief in his cabinet.
Prabowo’s current running mate is Widodo’s eldest son and Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who at 36 is set to become the country’s youngest vice president. The pair ended with around 59 per cent in the quick count, while former Jakarta governor turned presidential candidate Anies Baswedan and his running mate Muhaimin Iskandar came second with over 25 per cent of the total votes. In addition, former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo and his running mate Mahfud MD received about 16 per cent of the votes, according to various media reports. (Gilbert Humphrey)
