The 13th edition of The Script Road – Macau Literary Festival began yesterday. The event is held until 17 March at Casa Garden. This year’s event marks the return of The Script Road – Macau Literary Festival in Spring, after a forced move to Autumn during the pandemic.
The Script Road Director Ricardo Pinto said: “We’ve always felt that it makes the most sense to hold the Macau Literary Festival in March, as it’s the time of year when the events calendar is not so packed. That’s why, at the first opportunity, and after several editions held in October and November due to the pandemic, we decided to return the festival to its original date.”
The current edition, a celebration of the Tang dynasty poet Li Bai and 16th century Portuguese poet Luís de Camões, started with a photo exhibition by Chinese photographer Xu Peiwu, which was launched yesterday evening.
Entitled “Li Bai: Pilgrimage of An Immortal Nomad”, the photo exhibition at Casa Garden 1, showcasing images captured by the artist who has devoted a significant part of his life travelling from the same roads Li Bai did in the 700s, covering Chengdu, Xian, Gaochang and the ancient city of Gaochang, among others.
Xu completed his travels from February 2013 to February 2023, capturing the landscapes that inspired Li Bai in writing his romantic poems, using a Swiss medium-format camera.
Among other guests this year are Chinese author Dong Xi, winner of the 11th Mao Dun Prize for Literature, as well as American novelist and Pulitzer Prize finalist Chang-rae Lee, while writer and journalist João Céu e Silva, author and illustrator Fido Nesti and guitarist Marta Pereira da Costa are among the representatives from the Portuguese-speaking world.
The festival is supported by the Macau Government through the Cultural Development Fund and is hosted by the Orient Foundation (FO). For more information visit the festival’s website.
