Senior Portuguese police officers have recently travelled to London to apologise in person to the parents of Madeleine McCann, particularly to her father Gerry, over how he and his family were treated during the investigation in Portugal after their then three-year-old daughter disappeared from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Lagos on 3 May 2007, according to several media reports. After over 16 years, Madeleine has not yet been found.

Her parents initially were made suspects by the Portuguese police but this status was later dropped. However, the McCanns continue to receive online abuse from those who believe they were behind the little girl’s disappearance. Meanwhile, a German sex offender named Christian Brueckner was named prime suspect in 2020, according to a report by Metro tabloid.
