The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman has launched a course about US singer-songwriter turned global phenomenon Taylor Swift, with over 300 students registered in the course that focuses on the conception, construction and performance of Taylor Swift as a celebrity and how she can be used to explain the Filipinos’ and media’s relationship with class, politics, gender, race and fantasies of success and mobility, according to a report by GMA News Online.
Basically, the course will try to answer “the Filipinos’ relationship with the idea of celebrity because we have such interesting practices and discourses around celebrities,” said Professor Cherish Brillon, who is a “Swiftie”, as all Swift’s fans are called. Various “Taylor Swift” courses have also been offered in several other universities around the world, including the likes of Harvard University and Stanford University.
Meanwhile, the singer is scheduled to begin her sold out concert in Singapore – the only Southeast Asian stop in her current “The Eras Tour” – today. The shows are held from 2-4 March and 7-9 March. (Wong Kin Ang)
