Macau has been selected as a Culture City of East Asia 2025, the Office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture has announced

The “Culture City of East Asia” programme was created on the initiatives of China, Japan and South Korea. Every year, one or two cities in each of the three countries are selected, with the aim to develop their ties through culture and arts, according to Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Last year, Weifang and Dalian (China), Ishikawa (Japan), as well as Gimhae City (South Korea) were selected as Culture Cities of East Asia, while Chengdu and Meizhou in mainland China, Shizuoka in Japan and Jeonju in South Korea were the title holders in the year before

This year, after preliminary analysis and on-site visits to the evaluation unit, six candidate cities were chosen to enter the final assessment – including Macau (China).

Macau’s new title as a Culture City of East Asia 2025 has now pushed the SAR’s “golden business card” further in cementing the city as an international metropolis, according to the Office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture. (Gilbert Humphrey)
