MGM China has been working on a new residency show entitled “Macau 2049”, directed by world-renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou, and the show is now ready for its 15 December launch.
The show’s title refers to the year the Macau SAR will become fully integrated into the People’s Republic of China after 50 years of guaranteed high-level autonomy that maintains the current “one country, two systems” since the city’s return to the motherland on 19 December 1999.
The residency show, an integration of art and cutting-edge technology that transcends boundaries and time, will be staged at MGM Cotai’s 2,000-seat, high-tech MGM Theatre.
The show features crossover musician Wu Tong, choreography master Sang JiJia, renowned sound engineer Jin Shaogang, lighting director Ren Dongsheng, visual director Dominic Faraway and director of underwater photography Bernard Prentice, along with 20 world’s leading team with a Hollywood-scale behind-the-scenes crew of 582.
After 237 days of preparation and 2,838 hours of intricate craftsmanship, combined with state-of-the-art intelligent technologies, the masterpiece is ready to showcase “the epitome of millennia-old Chinese culture, redefining the imagination of intangible cultural heritage arts and performing arts while transcending the language and cultural boundaries,” according to MGM Cotai.
Furthermore, the show is meant to further develop Macau as a “City of Performing Arts” as well as promote Chinese culture to the world, as reported by various media groups.
