Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri made a surprise announcement about his abdication plan during the 69-year-old monarch’s annual Christmas speech, revealing his heir apparent Prince Guillaume will officially become Grand Duke of Luxembourg on 3 October next year.
Luxembourg is the world’s only sovereign Grand Duchy since its 1815 creation from the former Holy Roman Empire state of Duchy of Luxembourg. Henri is the grand duchy’s ninth monarch.
