Netflix’s new crime documentary “Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso” has created pros and cons among the people in Indonesia. The documentary is bringing back their memories of the 2016 murder of Wayan Mirna Salihin. Wongso, one of Salihin’s best friends, allegedly murdered Salihin by putting cyanide into the victim’s coffee. Wongso, an Australian permanent resident, was eventually convicted and is now serving a 20-year jail sentence in Indonesia. The case has been compared to the O. J. Simpson case in the US.
The documentary reminds how some expert witnesses during the trial pointed out there was no proof Salihin’s death was definitely caused by cyanide poisoning, especially when Australian forensic pathologist Beng Beng Ong underlined there was a possibility that Salihin died because of other possibilities like a stroke. The documentary’s release on Netflix has since drawn both support from those who believe Wongso was not guilty and criticisms from others who think otherwise. (Pandu Tirtayasa)
