Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is scheduled to be released from hospital detention tomorrow, the country’s current Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has said. Shinawatra, now 74, was Thailand’s prime minister from 2001 to 2006. He returned to Thailand in August 2023 after 15 years of self-exile overseas to avoid prison. He was detained as he arrived in the country and had his eight-year prison term commuted to a year by King Maha Vajiralongkorn. He has since served six months in hospital detention due to health conditions, according to various media reports.
