ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) recently announced that nearly 700 new wildlife species were discovered in Southeast Asia throughout 2020 to early 2024, including snakes, lizards, frogs and various insects, according to various media reports.

The ACB was established in 2005 as a response by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to the challenge of biodiversity loss in the region.

It is an intergovernmental organisation that facilitates cooperation and coordination among the 10 ASEAN member states and with regional and international organisations on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of such natural treasures, according to ACB’s website
