Convicted overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Mary Jane Veloso has been saved from Indonesian death row and will soon return to the Philippines after over a decade of Philippine diplomacy and consultations with the Indonesian Government, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced today.
The 39-year-old Nueva Ecija-born mother of two was arrested in Indonesia for drug trafficking in 2010 after she was allegedly duped by a drug syndicate into carrying 2.6 kg of heroin into Indonesia, where she was told there was a job as a domestic worker in Indonesia reportedly as a so-called replacement of another similar job initially offered to her in Malaysia.
Marcos expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and the Indonesian government for their goodwill, adding that the move reflected the strengthened partnership between the two Southeast Asian countries, according to a press release issued today by the Philippine Presidential Communication Office (PCO).
“Thank you, Indonesia. We look forward to welcoming Mary Jane home,” said Marcos.
He added, “Mary Jane’s story resonates with many: a mother trapped by the grip of poverty, who made one desperate choice that altered the course of her life. While she was held accountable under Indonesian law, she remains a victim of her circumstances.”
