The 35th Macao Arts Festival (MAF) kicked off yesterday with the opening performance, “Life of Pi”, at the Macao Cultural Centre’s Grand Auditorium (CCM) in Nape, with the opening ceremony held in the same evening at the CCM Lobby.
On Wednesday, the organiser held a press meeting with the show’s cast and production team, who shared their thoughts and presented the highlights of the show. In the afternoon that day, the cast members also conducted a roadshow at the Ruins of St. Paul’s.
Adapted from the novel by Canadian author Yann Martel, the spectacular stage production Life of Pi (pictured), which has swept across the West End in London and Broadway in New York, combines cutting-edge stagecraft with astonishing puppetry to create a fantastic journey for the public. The show won five prestigious Olivier Awards, including the Best Actor in a Supporting Role, awarded to several puppeteers who played the Bengal tiger “Richard Parker”, whose delicate manipulation brought the puppets to life.

Organised by the SAR’s Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), this year’s MAF will run through 31 May, presenting 15 selected programmes that include theatre, Chinese opera, dance, music and visual arts. – GNM
