A solo exhibition by local artist Andre Lui, entitled “Contemplating Still Life”, will be held at the Portuguese Bookshop on Rua de S. Domingos in the city centre from tomorrow until 11 may, with the opening ceremony to take place tonight.
Organised by Art For All Society Macau (AFA), “Contemplating Stil Life” is sponsored by the Macau Government’s Cultural Development Fund. The exhibition is the final part of AFA Macau’s 2023 annual programme “View-Non-View” – Artistic Imagery Art Exhibition Series.
Born in Macau in 1971, Lui is a renowned scholar, architect and artist who graduated from the Faculty of Architecture, Universidade Tecnica in Lisbon, Portugal in 1999. He completed a professional course on the maintenance and restoration of historic buildings and urban areas at the Centre des Hautes Etudes de Chaillot in Paris, France from 2003 to 2005 – the first Chinese architect to obtain the French diploma and professional qualification in architecture of cultural heritage.
In this exhibition, curated by Alice Kok, Lui showcases his latest work in the form of still-life paintings. “Still life” has been used as an element or theme in paintings since ancient times but, as a unique genre of European painting, it flourished in Dutch art in the 17th century, with artists depicting all sorts of objects in such a wide variety and detailed style ranging from ordinary daily objects like bread and fruits to large quantities of seafood.
As a cultural heritage scholar, Lui gazes at “still life” from the perspective of this part of history, according to AFA.
Lui’s series of painting include a sculpture of a philosopher covered by a plastic bag, a carved golden clock, poker cards, flowers, butterflies, glass cups, ceramic plates, blue Portuguese tiles, oysters, ceramic vases, Chinese tea cups, a bar table, an ancient map of Macau and old books, among others.
