Thaksin Shinawatra, former prime minister of Thailand, was immediately jailed upon returning to the country on Tuesday after 15 years of self-imposed exile. In 2006, he was ousted and faced jail sentence over corruption, prompting him to leave the country. Meanwhile, his party Pheu Thai’s candidate Srettha Thavisin was elected the country’s prime minister just hours after Shinawatra’s arrest as soon as the 74-year-old billionaire landed in a private jet at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport, welcomed by his supporters, according to various media reports.
