University of Macau (UM) recently welcomed 31 scientists to its health symposium, “Xplorer Symposia—Organelles: Structure, Function, and Disease”, including American cell biologist turned Nobel laureate Randy Wayne Schekman (pictured).
Organised by the New Cornerstone Science Foundation and UM’s Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), the three-day event explored organelles as they were featured in the symposium’s five sessions. The symposium also featured a poster exhibition showcasing 31 global research projects, with the “Best Poster Awards” going to young scholars Huang Yixin from University of Hong Kong, Xie Liming from UM and Zheng Jianfei from Tsinghua University.
According to Oxford Languages, an organelle is any of several organised or specialised structures within a live cell. Elsewhere, it has been described as a subcellular structure with one or more jobs to perform in the cell. (Kaira Sam)
