The exhibition “Parallel Worlds, Exhibition from Macao, China” will be held in Venice, Italy from 10 May to 23 November as one of the Collateral Events of the “19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia”, showcasing Macau’s unique architectural landscapes to the world through the photographic works of Dutch lensman Iwan Baan.
Jointly curated by Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate Wang Shu and Schelling Architecture Prize Recipient Lu Wenyu, the exhibition is organised by Macau’s Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and implemented by the city’s Macao Museum of Art (MAM), with the support of MGM.
The exhibition explores four different “parallel worlds” of Macau through photography and installations to transforms the city’s multifaceted urban landscapes into a poetic narrative of architectural language, presenting the urban texture of Macau, where Chinese and Western cultures co-exist as well as past and present landscapes do for over 400 years, according to IC.
In this exhibition, the invited architectural photographer, Baan, who won the Golden Lion at the La Biennale di Venezia, captures the fragmented memories and contemporary vitality of Macau’s urban space through his highly narrative visual language.
His photographs will also create a dialogue between architectural models and outdoor installations created by professors and students from the School of Architecture in the China Academy of Art as well as the the Department of Architecture and Design at Macau’s University of Saint Joseph (USJ), allowing viewers to experience the SAR’s unique charm amidst the interplay of history and modernity, according to the bureau.
