South Korea is planning to allow families in the country to hire domestic helpers from Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia and the Philippines. This plan of opening the country’s doors to foreign domestic workers is said to be aiming at encouraging South Korean families to have children, hence boosting the country’s low birthrate, according to several media reports. Some people have said that, if the plan takes place, many domestic helpers currently working in Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan may be attracted to work in South Korea instead.
